Arts and the Nobel Prize for Medicine

First off: Congratulations to all the 2013 Nobel Prize Winners in Medicine, Physics, Chemistry, Literature, Peace and Economics!

One of the 2013 winners, Thomas Sudhof, who shares this year’s Nobel Prize for medicine and physiology, told The Lancet in August 2010 that his most influential teacher was his bassoon teacher, Herbert Tauscher, who: “…taught me that the only way to do something right is to practice and listen and practice and listen, hours, and hours, and hours.”

It’s really wonderful to confirm again that, no matter where you go in life – even if you become a scientist – a solid foundation in the arts will help along the way. It may even help you win a Nobel Prize!

Congratulations again to Mr. Sudhof and keep practicing!

Family Focused Ted Talk

During one of our recent Ted Talk Tuesdays, we watched an interesting talk by Bruce Feiler on a new strategy for decreasing stress in families.  Originally developed to improve software programming, the strategy of agile programming can give children a stake in the rules and decisions of the family, yet still leaves parents in charge.  After implementing it within his own family, everyone felt less stressed and stronger as a family unit.  Check out the link below for the complete Ted Talk.

Stress: A Child’s Perspective

One of our artisitter® caregivers was recently faced with a child in distress, but never one to accept defeat, she came up with a creative solution.  The evening started out as a celebration when he lost his first tooth.  He couldn’t wait to leave it under his pillow for this Tooth Fairy he’d been hearing about.  But alas, tragedy struck; the tooth disappeared!  The little guy was now obviously distraught.  So our artisitter® caregiver came up with a clever artistic solution and proposed a Tooth Fairy Reminder Card to put under his pillow in place of the missing tooth. One side was titled, “Tooth Fairy Reminder” and they wrote his name and date, and the other side he decorated with a silly face.  He was so relieved and could now go to bed confident that the Tooth Fairy wouldn’t forget him!

Tote of Toys!

Our Sitter Studio® totes, filled with art supplies and games, are one of kids’ favorite things about having an artisitter® caregiver come for a sitting appointment. We start the totes off with a few fun supplies, and then each artisitter® customizes them with toys, games and art supplies selected for the season and the child.

One of our artistiter® caregivers recently posted this wonderfully cute picture of the supplies in her tote: String, paper, paint, crayons, a book and the coup de gras: Toilet paper tubes!  It looks like she and the kids are going to have a great time.
